It is time for a new generation of Europeans to help build a different Europe, Frans Timmermans said today in an open exchange of ideas with progressives in Brussels.
Taking questions at an ‘Ask Frans’ event, Timmermans explained his ideas for the European election campaign and how he will work with social democrats and civil society across Europe.
“So much is at stake in these elections in May and we need to put all our energy into this campaign, in every corner of Europe. As social democrats we have a responsibility to look to the future and to adapt our societies to a rapidly changing world. The next European Commission and Parliament must create more economic opportunities for young people, eliminate the gender pay gap and violence against women, and take urgent measures to build a more sustainable society and tackle the threat of climate change. This will be the basis of the programme we offer to Europe’s citizens. It is time to build a fair, free and sustainable Europe.”
The PES will set out its programme for the European elections when it adopts its Manifesto at the PES Election Congress in Madrid on 22-23 February.
Timmermans has already begun campaigning across Europe, with visits to Helsinki, Madrid, Zaragoza and Rome in the past week. The Ask Frans event was organised by ‘I Vote Where I Live’. It took place at Mundo B, an ecologically renovated office in the centre of Brussels which is home to several leading NGOs.
